Everyone Has a Story

  • March is Women’s History Month, sometimes known as Women’s HER-story month. National Write Your Story Day also falls within the month of March on the 14th. With all this talk about stories, perhaps we can all be inspired to write our own stories and, maybe, even share them. Everyone has a story.

Stories have been a part of human existence from the beginning. Storytelling and story writing are how information was documented and shared from one generation to the next.

Writing your story – any story about yourself – documents and celebrates who you are. You can hand write it or type it using anything you like. It can record important moments or memories. It can be about overcoming a challenge you faced or an accomplishment you feel proud about. You can write about what you have done and what you would like to do.

Writing your story can be therapeutic. It helps you recount and work through your journey and process what needs to be processed.

Sharing our story can help others but just because you write it doesn’t mean you have to share it. If you decide you would like to share it, you can do that however you like. You can store it away to pass down to another generation, offer it to a friend, read it out loud, create a blog, or consider turning your story into a book.

For women in particular, and, in tying into the observation of Women’s History this month, it’s important to note that women’s contributions to history are often missing or overlooked. In an article on NBCUniversal, Laverne Cox, an Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer, prominent equal rights advocate, and the host of “Live from E!”, poignantly notes that it’s time to center women in herstory by shining a spotlight on their past contributions and committing to telling their narratives in the future.

Writing our story helps us to document and celebrate who we are. It helps us grow. Sharing our story helps and empowers others. Everyone has a story. This Women’s HERstory Month and National Write Your Story Day, let’s be inspired to write our stories. And, if we feel comfortable sharing, let’s be inspired to share our stories.

“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” — Brené Brown
